Ask the Dentist

Navigating your child's dental journey can be complex. Here are professional answers to the most common questions from local parents concerned about pediatric oral health.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a visit by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits establish a dental home and catch potential issues before they develop.

Are baby teeth really that important?

Absolutely. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, aid in proper speech development, and are essential for good nutrition. Neglecting decay in baby teeth can lead to pain, infection, and damage to the underlying adult teeth.

What is the best way to prevent cavities at home?

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once the teeth touch, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Regular professional cleanings every six months are also critical for deep plaque removal in hard-to-reach areas.

When should my child stop using a pacifier?

Most children stop on their own by age 2 to 4. To protect healthy jaw and tooth development, pacifier use should stop by 36 months of age. Prolonged pacifier use can result in ear problems and even cause changes to jaw growth.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Modern digital X-rays are extremely safe, using very low levels of radiation. We use them selectively to find hidden decay, monitor growing teeth, and assess jaw progress. We always take protective measures, like lead aprons, for every scan.
